I'm going to have another play published by YouthPLAYS soon (hooray!) and as part of the published book, there will be an"Author Speaks" section - an informal, generally straightforward Q&A with the writer. One of the questions is "What is your writing process?" I read my answer to Katy and she inisisted that I share it with you. So here it is:
i dont wanna i dont wanna you cant make me i dont wanna I don’t wanna who said i have to no one said that im in charge and you cant make me/Maybe I should have gone to law school. That’s what my dad wanted/Maybe I should just throw it all away and be an actor, or a pilot, or actually get a teaching credential instead of pretending that I don’t want to teach when I probably–/I think I need to do a little more research before I start. That’s the problem! I just need to read one more article, watch more more video, maybe one more episode of "Mad Men" or "The Good Wife" or more Family Guy clips on my phone, just, like, nine more Top Ten Baseball Highlights/Top Sixteen greatest muffins of television history/Did I Call My Friend Back From When He Called Like Six Months Ago? I Should Really Do That/Time to update my website! I haven’t posted to my social pages in so long I should probably/I AM THE DUMBEST, MOST SELFISH, MOST BASIC PERSON IN THE HISTORY OF HUMAN THOUGHT! WHO WOULD EVER CARE ABOUT WHAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ANYTHING!!/my cat is right, i am hungry, i need a snack and a cuddle and a nap and then maybe i’ll get my pages done but after just one more video and one more mad men/Wow, so many messages in my spam! I wonder if these are important/That last article wasn’t helpful, I need another article–/JUST SHUT UP AND NEVER WRITE ANOTHER WORD - YOU’RE DONE, YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE, SHUT UP/Don’t forget about all of those work deadlines for work-work and not the work you wish was your work-work/Are you ready to bring pages to your writers group tomorrow?/PP-AA-NN-II-CC!!/
(write, write, write)
Red Vines, Diet Coke, ice water, restless mattress jostling until back at the laptop at 4:35am (rewrite, rewrite, edit)
And poof - pages!
